On April 29, 2025, and in collaboration with Welcome in Utrecht, the Invest in Young Talent initiative, led by Dr. Khaldon Araffa, organized a special educational workshop in Utrecht, the Netherlands, targeting Arabic-speaking refugee children. This event was part of a broader series of workshops aimed at empowering the next generation in emerging communities.
Supporting the Arab Community Through Technology and Education 🤖The goal of this workshop was to support the Arab community in Utrecht by offering children a free, interactive educational experience that enhances their technical and language skills, while fostering a sense of belonging and confidence in their abilities. The initiative is part of a series of educational activities implemented across several European cities to help refugee children integrate into inspiring and inclusive learning environments.
What Did the Children Learn?Children aged 9 to 14 participated in engaging, hands-on activities including:
✅ An introduction to the world of robotics and programming in a simplified way
✅ Using the Mirte robot as an interactive learning tool
✅ Programming the robot using Blockly, a visual coding environment ideal for beginners
✅ Exploring sensors, motors, and feedback in smart robotic systems
✅ Team-based collaboration to solve programming challenges and develop creative thinking
The workshop utilized Mirte, an open-source educational robot developed by TU Delft, to introduce children to technical concepts in a tangible and fun way. Thanks to its interactive design, the robot served as a bridge between theory and practice, making complex ideas both accessible and enjoyable.
The "Start from the End" ApproachAs with all workshops organized by the initiative, we employed the "Start from the End" educational method. Participants were first shown the final outcome—the completed robot—and then guided through the steps to understand how it was built. This approach sparks curiosity, encourages critical thinking, and promotes strategic learning, leading to a more effective and skill-building educational experience.
Gratitude and AcknowledgmentWe extend our sincere thanks to Welcome in Utrecht for their valuable support and partnership in this important event, and to TU Delft for providing the Mirte robot, which played a central role in the success of this workshop.
